Empty Chair: Kaciaryna Andrejeva (Bachvałava) – BELARUS - TLRC/PEN International 2025.05.29

Kaciaryna Andrejeva (Bachvałava) – BELARUS

Journalist, writer and poet Kaciaryna Andrejeva (real name Bachvałava) was arrested in November 2020 while livestreaming a peaceful protest honouring the memory of artist Raman Bandarenka, reportedly killed by Belarusian security officers following the fraudulent presidential elections of August 2020.

Andrejeva was sentenced to two years in prison in February 2021 on trumped up charges of organising and participating in actions that violate public order. In July 2022, Andrejeva was sentenced to an additional eight years in prison on bogus charges of ‘state treason’, in a trial held behind closed doors, with no further details disclosed or evidence presented to substantiate the allegation.

Andrejeva’s documentary book Belarusian Donbas, co-authored with her husband, journalist Ihar Iljaš, and published in 2020, details their investigation into the role of Belarusians in the war in Donbas. The book was deemed ‘extremist’ by Belarusian authorities and subsequently banned in 2021.

Andrejeva is currently being held in a medium-security penal colony in Homel, southeastern Belarus. She is composing poetry in the Belarusian language, which remains severely repressed in Belarus as the authorities continue to assert the dominance of the Russian language.

PEN International calls for Andrejeva’s immediate and unconditional release.
